In the third shooting incident of this summer, a shoot-out in College Station, Texas, near the Texas A&M University, has left three people dead. The victims included two civilians and one police officer. The shooter was 35-year old Thomas Caffall, who attacked a constable who had arrived at his home to serve him an eviction notice.
Caffall fired multiple weapons at the police—it was later revealed that he was a collector of guns. News outlets noted that on his Facebook page, he frequently posted photographs of guns and other automatic weapons.
As noted by the Democracy Now website, the incident has spurred activists to demand gun regulation. On August, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence released a letter urging presidential debate moderator Jim Lehrer to ask President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney to present plans for addressing gun violence. The letter notes more than 32 people are murdered with guns every day in the United States.
The shooter’s mother, Linda Weaver, mentioned that her son suffered from a history of mental illness.
The other two shooting incidents included the Colorado shooting at a movie theatre, where 13 people died, and the massacre at a Sikh gurdwara in Wisconsin. The intolerance and culture of violence in the US is erupting in domestic tragedies.
