In his article Islamic Iran’s determined self-assertion and self-sufficiency (Crescent, June ’09), Abu Dharr warns that Mu‘awiyah lurks beneath the surface. What Brother Abu Dharr feared came true after the recent presidential election in Iran. Mu‘awiyah’s followers were exposed by the Qur’an, as they were 1,400 years ago in the Battle of Siffin (Mu‘awiyah vs. Imam Ali (a)).
On the verge of defeat, Mu‘awiyah’s followers were advised to raise the Qur’an on their spears. In Iran’s presidential elections that were clearly won by Ahmadinajad, the followers of Mu‘awiyah were told to come out in the streets for mass, bloody demonstrations holding the Qur’an on their heads. What a repetition of history after 1,400 years. All credit to Brother Abu Dharr to forewarn all Muslims and the followers of Imam Ali (a) about the Mu‘awiyahs of today. The snake has not shed its skin.
