Iran’s supreme leader Seyyed Ali Khamenei has spoken. The election was carried out correctly; President Ahmadinejad’s victory over his main rival Mousavi reflects the wishes of the Iranian people. Others, including Western observers, too confirm this.

“Ahmadinejad won. Get over it” was the conclusion of two American analysts, Flynt and Hillary Mann Leverett, who worked under President Bush. They believe Western “Iran experts” underestimated Ahmadinejad’s broad support and their shock is entirely self-generated, based on wishful thinking. Ken Ballen and Patrick Doherty, two American researchers, arrived at a similar conclusion based on their own, and only, scientific opinion survey in Iran.

The arguments in favour of deceit are thin, “Election results were announced too soon”, they said. But the first one to declare himself “winner” was Mousavi even before the polls closed! “There was shortage of ballot sheets in some polling stations.” Does that necessarily mean cheating? “Some polling stations were closed too early.” Others stayed open longer, based on voter turnout. “Mousavi is Azeri, so why didn’t he win Azeri votes?” But Ahmadinejad has served in Azeri provinces and speaks fluent Azeri. And the Rahbar, Ayatullah Khamenei, who is associated with Ahmadinejad, is also Azeri! In some provinces there were more votes than the number of registered voters. But people can vote outside their provinces, and these votes supplement the votes there.
